![]() In May 2021, the 1Password Linux desktop app officially moved out of beta it supports most major Linux distributions. On macOS, you will need 10.13 High Sierra or later. ![]() It currently requires 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. Its desktop app works best on the most up-to-date operating systems. The Windows desktop app is only available in the Microsoft Windows Store (opens in new tab).ġPassword's options are a little less complicated, but just as robust. The LastPass desktop app works on supported versions of Windows and macOS, although LastPass would rather you stick to the browser extensions. Full support with automatic form-filling requires Android 8.0 Oreo or later, but the app will run on Android 5.0 Lollipop and later. On mobile, LastPass is available for iOS 13 and up. The "binary" Chrome browser extension is not supported in Chrome OS. On Mac, the desktop app gives you the Safari binary extension, but there's a separate installer for the Chrome one.Ĭhrome OS can use either the regular LastPass Chrome browser extension or the LastPass Android app. To get the "binary" extensions on Windows and Linux, use the universal installer. The second type of extension, available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera, has a " binary component" that can log you in (and out of) LastPass on other desktop browsers and supports Windows fingerprint login. (Brave and Vivaldi can use this Chrome extension and SeaMonkey the Firefox one.) The first is the regular kind you can find in your browser's extensions library. There are two types of LastPass browser extensions. You can also download a Windows or Linux "universal installer" mini-app that will put the extension on every browser you have installed. Supported browsers include Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari and Opera. To use the LastPass browser extensions, as LastPass recommends, you must be running Windows 8.1 and above, "the two most recent major macOS versions" (currently includes 10.15 Catalina and later), Chrome OS or one of the most common distributions of Linux. With the addition of 1Password's full support for Linux (opens in new tab) on desktop, the two password managers are roughly comparable in terms of compatibility with major platforms. Bitwarden also has a cheaper family plan at $40/year compared to LastPass’s $48/year for six-user access and unlimited sharing.1Password does not have a free option, but it does have a trial period of two weeks. LastPass' free tier lets you use the premium functions for a month. ![]() LastPass individual premium plan is $36/year for a similar set of features. ![]() Starting at $10/year, the Premium Individual plan offers file sharing through Bitwarden Send, support for Yubikey, FIDO2, and DUO, 1GB storage, Bitwarden Authenticator, and priority support. For example, the Free Individual plans offer unlimited storage for logins, notes, cards, identities, and access to the software on any device.īitwarden premium plans are cheaper compared to LastPass. Going premium is the only way to get unlimited access.Ĭomparatively, Bitwarden has fewer limitations for its free plan. It also limits device switch to three times, which means you must decide whether you would rather have it active on your PC or mobile all the time. LastPass free users can no longer use the password manager on two devices simultaneously. However, starting March 2021, the company majorly limited the functionalities for its free plan. LastPass became popular for the free tier goodies. And these trackers seemed to be functioning as crash reporting and analytics tools. Meanwhile, Exodus found only two trackers in the Bitwarden Android app. These trackers were collecting data either about the user or their usage. Conversely, in its report published on February 19, 2021, the Exodus Privacy app discovered seven web trackers in the LastPass app. And in 2019, a security researcher from Google’s Project Zero identified a “clickjacking” vulnerability which LastPass subsequently addressed and corrected.īitwarden also scores high with third parties like Cure53 and Insight Risk Consulting. Unlike Bitwarden, LastPass experienced a major security incident back in 2015. The Bitwarden source code is also available on GitHub for independent reviewers to audit and explore any vulnerabilities. Included is the support for industry-standard two-factor and multi-factor authentication, offering an extra layer of protection.ĭespite the similarities in the standard security measures, Bitwarden leads in the security category, though, due to its clean track record and open-source nature. Encrypted data is then synced with TLS (Transport Layer Security), thus protecting against on-path attackers. Using a zero-knowledge security model, both options encrypt data at the device level with AES-256-bit encryption. On the security front, both the password managers have the basics covered well.
